Legal English: all chapters

Legal English

Twelve interactive chapters, the last of them a final test, and a placement test, for lawyers and law students working in English. Every chapter runs in the browser, saves your work on your own device and prints to PDF.

Each chapter is self-contained. Work through them in order for a full course, or go straight to the field you need. Exercises mark themselves and explain what was wrong, and the writing tasks include a checker that reads your draft.

Answer keys and model answers sit behind a code that your teacher holds. If you are teaching with these pages, the key explains the marking scheme for every written task.

New to the course? Read the English for lawyers overview first: who it is for, how the chapters work and how to get live lessons.

Foundations

Rights, obligations and the relationships a commercial lawyer meets first.

Business and environment

Company work, from formation to insolvency, and the regulation around it. These chapters add recorded listening and two model answers for every written task.

Maritime

A two-part sequence: the voyage and its documents, then the casualty file that follows when something goes wrong.

Grammar for lawyers

Three shorter units on the grammar that legal writing leans on most. Keys open with the teacher code.

Check your level

Sit the placement test at the start to find your level, or at the end to see what has stuck. The final test closes the course and points you back to the chapters that need another look.

How your work is saved. Everything stays in the browser you are using, on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, so use the same browser to come back to a chapter, and use Print or PDF if you want a copy to keep. The one exception is the written task in the placement test, where the text you submit is sent for marking and nothing else; the final test’s drafting tasks stay in your browser for your teacher to mark.
