Conditional forms and meanings

The reference follows the same four-column shape as the class board, combining the supplied model with this unit’s legal-English style.

Form `if/when + present simple, present simple` Use General rules, facts, routines and automatic results. Modals or imperatives can appear when the meaning requires them. Legal examples If a filing lacks a signature, the registry returns it. If evidence is irrelevant in this training example, the judge excludes it. When the jury returns a verdict, the clerk records it. Meaning check Is this one future event? No. It is presented as generally or repeatedly true.	Form `if/unless + present simple, will/may/might/can/must + base verb` Use A real or reasonably possible future condition and its likely, possible, permitted or required consequence. Legal examples If the witness attends tomorrow, counsel will question her. If the parties reach agreement, the court may approve it. Unless the appellant files by Friday, the registry will not process the appeal. Meaning check Is the future result certain? No. It depends on the condition.	Form `if + past simple, would/could/might + base verb` Use An unreal, unlikely or imagined present or future situation. Were is common in formal hypothetical language. Legal examples If the regulation applied here, the company would need a licence. If I were the judge, I would ask counsel to clarify. If the evidence were stronger, the prosecutor might continue. Meaning check Does the past form necessarily mean past time? No. It marks hypothetical distance.	Form `if + past perfect, would/could/might have + past participle` Use An unreal past condition and imagined past result. The actual past is now fixed; the speaker imagines an alternative. Legal examples If counsel had filed on time, the court would have considered the appeal. If the witness had attended, she could have clarified the timeline. If the report had been signed, the authority could have relied on it. Meaning check Can the past event now be changed? No.
Mixed conditionals · different time references in the two clauses
Past condition → present result `if + past perfect → would/could + base verb` If the firm had retained the records, it could answer the claim now. A different past decision would change the present situation. Present state → past result `if + past simple → would/could have + past participle` If the policy were clearer, the officer would not have made that error. A present quality or state is imagined as changing a past event.

Remember: A comma normally follows an opening if-clause. In ordinary first conditionals, do not normally put will in the if-clause. Modal verbs change certainty, permission, possibility or obligation without changing the basic conditional relationship.
